Letters each language needs

Most fonts cover basic English letters only. Ghanaian and other West African languages use extra letters. If a font lacks them, your poster, programme or logo shows boxes or mixed fonts.

LanguageExtra letters tested
Twi (Akan)ɛ Ɛ ɔ Ɔ
Gaɛ Ɛ ɔ Ɔ ŋ Ŋ
Eweɛ Ɛ ɔ Ɔ ŋ Ŋ ɖ Ɖ ƒ Ƒ ɣ Ɣ ʋ Ʋ
Yorubaẹ Ẹ ọ Ọ ṣ Ṣ
Hausaɓ Ɓ ɗ Ɗ ƙ Ƙ ƴ Ƴ

Yoruba also uses tone marks (like ọ̀ and ṣ́). Tone marks sit on top of letters, so test your real words in the box above.

Fonts that include ɛ, Ɛ, ɔ and Ɔ. The table above tests every font live in your browser and marks each one Yes or shows what is missing.

Why do Twi letters show as boxes or a different font?

Install a keyboard that supports Akan, such as Gboard with the Twi (Akan) language added, or a Ghanaian keyboard layout on your computer.
